Lucknow: Delhi high court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya is only the second judge from the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court to be elevated to the Supreme Court in the past 25 years. Prior to him, Justice Brijesh Kumar was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2000. Justice Upadhyaya began his legal and judicial career in Lucknow and served for more than 11 years as a judge of the Lucknow bench before being appointed the chief justice. In May 2007, he was appointed the Chief Standing Counsel of Uttar Pradesh and held the post until his elevation to the high court in Nov 2011. He was appointed a judge of Allahabad high court in Nov 2011. He became the senior judge of the Lucknow bench in March 2023. Justice Upadhyaya was appointed the Chief Justice of the Bombay high court in July 2023. In Jan 2025, the Union govt notified his transfer as the Chief Justice of the Delhi high court.
The SC Collegium recommended CJ Upadhyaya’s elevation as a judge of the Supreme Court on Monday.
