Lucknow: Incessant rainfall in the city on Friday not only was the highest of this monsoon season so far, but also the heaviest single-day downpour in the month of Sept in three years. A few spells of rain are expected on Saturday and Sunday as well.
As a result, rainfall activity will also decline, but intermittent showers are expected till Sunday, said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Lucknow, Amausi. The reason behind the non-stop rainfall was a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which gradually moved inland and fed an enormous amount of moisture into the state’s atmosphere. The system is expected to further move towards UP and weaken by Saturday.
Thereafter, after a break, it started raining again from 4 am and light to moderate showers continued till the filing of this report – a total of 20 hours till Friday midnight. In fact, the maximum temperature of the state capital was just 23.5 degrees Celsius, nearly 10 notches below normal and almost the same as Uttarakhand’s hill station Mussoorie. The minimum temperature was 22.4 degrees. However, as per the data from 8.30 am till 8.30 pm, total rainfall on Friday was enough to break the three-year record for the highest in a single day in the month of Sept. The previous data shows that the highest single-day rainfall in Sept 2025 was 53.2 mm recorded on Sept 1. Similarly, Sept 11, 2024, recorded 43.9 mm and Sept 11, 2023, 93.9 mm – both were the highest in 24 hours for the month in the respective years. The order covers schools from pre-primary to Class 12 in both urban and rural areas of Lucknow.
Nevertheless, Friday’s rainfall was also one of the longest rain spells witnessed by the city. It started raining at around Thursday midnight and intermittent showers continued for a couple of hours. The difference between the day and night temperatures was only a degree. The decision was taken in view of the adverse weather conditions and the heavy rainfall forecast issued by the meteorological department. Schools across Lucknow, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Siddharth Nagar, Gonda and Ayodhya will remain closed on Saturday in view of incessant rains and waterlogging in several areas. Teaching activities in all govt, govt-aided and private schools, irrespective of the board, will remain suspended for the day, according to an order issued by the Lucknow district magistrate’s office on Friday.
Further, Lucknow recorded its highest single-day rain for the 2026 monsoon season at 78.4 mm on Aug 7.
This means that Friday’s rainfall is now the highest of the season so far, said a met official.
