Lucknow: Two brothers, allegedly involved in a string of thefts and burglary cases across multiple districts, were arrested after a police encounter in Amethi’s Shivratanganj area late Tuesday night. One of the accused sustained a bullet injury in his leg during retaliatory firing by the police.

Police recovered jewellery, a country-made pistol, cartridges and Rs 15,000 in cash from their possession. Police records show Vakil has 33 cases registered against him, while Chand Mohammad has eight.

Police said the duo allegedly surveyed houses during the day and targeted them for theft at night. A police team led by Shivratanganj SHO Dayashankar Mishra was conducting vehicle checks near Kukaha Rampur crossing under Operation Chakravyuh when the suspects arrived on a motorcycle, according to circle officer Dinesh Kumar Mishra. The arrested men were identified as Vakil alias Senapati and his brother Chand Mohammad alias Badshah, residents of Itaunja village in Ayodhya district. When asked to stop, they allegedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated, injuring Vakil in the leg. The motorcycle later fell, enabling police to arrest both men. During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to two thefts in Shivratanganj and a burglary in bazaar Shukul area. After treatment, both were produced in court and sent to judicial custody.
