Mahoba is experiencing transformative economic growth with a remarkable 23.5 percent increase

Mahoba is experiencing transformative economic growth with a remarkable 23.5 percent increase in its Gross District Domestic Product.

The development strategy since 2017 has increasingly focused on improving connectivity, irrigation, agricultural productivity, investment and basic infrastructure, while leveraging Mahoba’s traditional strengths in stone, handicrafts, agriculture and livestock. Uttar Pradesh’s latest District Domestic Product estimates show that Mahoba recorded a 23.5 per cent growth in Gross District Domestic Product at current prices in 2023–24, placing it among the districts with the highest growth rates in the state that year. The current economic snapshot published by Invest UP places Mahoba’s GSDP/GDDP at around Rs 8,153 crore.

Because estimates are revised and may use different series, the broad trend points towards an expanding economic base, while district-level GDP estimates for different years should be compared carefully. Because mahoba’s economy has traditionally depended heavily on the primary sector, this growth is significant. The emerging transformation therefore is not simply about increasing output but about gradually broadening the economic base.

Mahoba has witnessed a gradual transformation in its economic and development profile during the last nine years. Economy showing stronger momentum The change can be seen in the district’s economic performance. Agriculture and irrigation at the Centre

Located in the Bundelkhand region, the district has historically faced structural challenges including water scarcity, dependence on agriculture, limited industrialisation and migration for employment. Earlier district-level data showed that agriculture and allied activities accounted for around half of the district economy, while mining and quarrying had also acquired a substantial role.

The district is also part of the new Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana, under which 100 districts across India have been selected for focused agricultural development. Mahoba is among 12 districts selected from Uttar Pradesh. Mahoba recorded the highest growth among Uttar Pradesh districts in the livestock sub-sector, at 42.1 per cent, according to the 2023–24 District Domestic Product estimates. Mahoba was among the five leading districts in Uttar Pradesh in inland fish production in 2023–24, indicating that its reservoirs and water bodies are increasingly contributing to economic activity beyond conventional crop cultivation. The 296-km Bundelkhand Expressway has become a major transport artery for the region, with Mahoba included among the districts connected through the wider expressway network. At the Uttar Pradesh Global Investors Summit in 2023, the state government said that investment proposals worth about ₹24,000 crore had been received for Mahoba. At the regional level, Bundelkhand received investment proposals worth more than Rs 3.75 lakh crore at the 2023 Global Investors Summit, according to the state government, while the region’s industrial infrastructure has subsequently been strengthened through initiatives such as the Bundelkhand Industrial Development Authority (BIDA). The 23.5 per cent current-price GDDP growth in 2023–24, strong growth in livestock, significant fisheries output, major irrigation investments, improved expressway connectivity and proposals for manufacturing and logistics infrastructure together indicate a district moving towards a more diversified economic structure.

Because improving water availability can have an economy-wide effect: higher farm productivity increases rural incomes, supports livestock and dairy activity, creates demand for farm services and reduces vulnerability to rainfall fluctuations, this is particularly relevant for Mahoba. A changing development profile The transformation of Mahoba over the last nine years is therefore best understood as a process rather than a single industrial breakthrough. Agriculture remains fundamental to Mahoba’s economy. Government investment has consequently placed considerable emphasis on dams, reservoirs, irrigation systems and drinking-water infrastructure. Projects associated with the Arjun Sagar project, Urmil Dam, Kabrai and Lahsura dam systems have been highlighted as important for supplying irrigation water to agricultural fields as well as meeting drinking-water requirements. The programme focuses on agricultural productivity, crop diversification, sustainable farming, storage, irrigation and agricultural credit. Livestock and fisheries add new dimensions An important recent development has been the growing contribution of allied activities. Fisheries are another emerging component. This diversification is important for a Bundelkhand district where agriculture alone cannot always provide stable incomes. Connectivity changes the economic geography One of the most visible changes of the period has been the improvement in regional connectivity. UPEIDA identifies Mahoba as one of the districts along the Bundelkhand Expressway corridor. Better connectivity has implications well beyond travel time. It improves access to markets, facilitates movement of agricultural produce and raw materials, and makes locations outside the traditional industrial centres more attractive for investment. Investment interest in Mahoba has also increased. These proposals were part of the larger investment interest generated for Bundelkhand. For Mahoba, the significance lies in creating opportunities to move from a predominantly resource- and agriculture-based economy towards processing, manufacturing, logistics and value-added activities. Traditional strengths getting an economic platform Mahoba’s traditional economic identity also provides opportunities for local enterprise. The district is known for its stone-related work, brass work in Sri Nagar, traditional crafts and distinctive betel-leaf cultivation. The district administration identifies Sri Nagar for brass works and antiques and records betel-leaf cultivation as a specialised local agricultural activity. The challenge is to connect these traditional activities with modern markets, packaging, branding, e-commerce and tourism. Improved roads and digital connectivity can help artisans and small producers reach customers beyond the district. Tourism and heritage as an economic opportunity Mahoba also possesses a substantial heritage base. The district is associated with the Chandela period and the legendary Alha-Udal tradition. Its attractions include the Sun Temple, Gokhar Parvat, Madan Sagar, Charkhari and several historic temples and water bodies. Better connectivity can help convert this heritage into a larger tourism economy involving hotels, homestays, local transport, handicrafts, food services and cultural events. The district continues to face the structural challenges associated with Bundelkhand, including water stress and the need for more diversified employment. At the same time, the economic indicators show important new momentum.

The district’s semi-arid conditions have historically made irrigation and water conservation particularly important.

The next phase is expected to build on this infrastructure. UPEIDA has proposed an Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Cluster at Mahoba along the Bundelkhand Expressway. The proposed clusters are intended to support manufacturing, logistics and warehousing, drawing on regional strengths such as agro-based industries, minerals, stonecraft and traditional crafts. Investment and industrial possibilities The next stage will depend on converting infrastructure and investment proposals into sustained production, jobs and local enterprise. If agriculture, water management, livestock, fisheries, stonecraft, tourism, logistics and new industrial activity develop together, Mahoba can increasingly emerge as an important economic centre within the Bundelkhand region rather than remaining primarily a rural and resource-dependent district.
