Prayagraj : In a major traffic overhaul in Civil Lines, the authorities have decided to remove dividers and footpath railings on the key stretches of MG Road and Sardar Patel Marg to create additional parking space and free road space, improving vehicular movement. The two roads will also be redesigned, freeing them of structures obstructing traffic movement. The decisions were taken at a meeting chaired by divisional commissioner Dr Lokesh M with PDA vice-chairperson Rishiraj, municipal commissioner Sai Teja, DCP Manish Shandilya, other officials and representatives of various trade bodies. The meeting focused on easing congestion, regulating parking and removing encroachments in the Civil Lines area. On MG Road, officials were directed to remove the divider between the road and service lane from Hanuman Mandir crossing to Patthar Girja and develop an appropriate slope. A roadside parking arrangement on the lines of Thornhill Road will be created. On Sardar Patel Marg, the footpath railings on both sides till Vivekanand Crossing will be removed. The slopes will be redesigned to match the road level and additional parking space will be created. Structures obstructing the redesigned roads will also be removed. The meeting also approved a paid parking arrangement on both the roads. MG Road, from Hanuman Mandir to Patthar Girja, will be developed as a vending-free zone. Vendors and roadside sellers operating without authorisation will be shifted to designated alternative locations, and encroachment in parking lanes, roadside vehicle repairs and unauthorised parking-related activities will also be removed. Officials were also directed to streamline the multi-level parking facility in Civil Lines, with permanent parking on upper floors and space on the lower floor reserved for vehicles making frequent daily trips. To address the problem of e-rickshaws, the municipal commissioner and PDA vice-chairperson were asked to prepare an alternative traffic plan covering e-rickshaws, e-autos and other transport options. Municipal Corporation and PDA teams will coordinate to clear debris, remove unauthorised structures and clean the road. Download the TOI App.
