Rai writes to Centre, seeks probe, ex gratia in UP crime cases

UP Congress president Ajay Rai

He questioned how the bus could travel around 47 km through Delhi without the incident being detected by police and raised questions over the reported delay in making the case public.

He said the family had alleged torture and assault by police and demanded an impartial probe and strict action against those found guilty. Rai said custodial deaths raised serious questions on human rights and police accountability. Rai sought accountability if mandatory safety measures, including CCTV cameras and GPS tracking, were absent. He also urged authorities to protect the survivor’s identity and provide security and medical assistance to her. On the Badaun incident, Rai referred to the death of Rajesh Kori in police custody at Dataganj police station.

Lucknow: Citing the alleged rape of a minor in NCR and the death of a man in police custody in Badaun, UP Congress president Ajay Rai on Wednesday wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah seeking a report from the Centre on the state’s law and order situation.
