Shamli : A mining officer and a clerk in Shamli have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 85,000, while searches at the officer’s office and residence led to the seizure of Rs 71.89 lakh in cash, police said on Friday. In his complaint, Parmal alleged that he had applied for a sand-mining lease online on Sept 2 and that his application was pending with the Shamli mining officer, who demanded Rs 1.35 lakh to process and forward it. When Parmal sought action on his application, the officer allegedly directed him to Saddam, who also demanded Rs 1.35 lakh, police said.
After verifying the allegations through a pre-trap exercise, the vigilance team arrested Singh and Saddam while they were accepting the money, officials said. Eleven officers took part in the trap, officials said. The Meerut unit of the Uttar Pradesh vigilance establishment also seized a digital video recorder from the mining office and files related to the case, following which a case was registered against mining officer Sudhakar Singh and clerk Mohammad Saddam under Prevention of Corruption Act at Adarsh Mandi police station.
Before the trap, the team contacted the Muzaffarnagar district magistrate on Wednesday and included two independent govt witnesses in the operation.
