In Varanasi, five individuals were arrested on Friday for allegedly conducting religious conversions during a Christian prayer meeting in Kadipur village, located under the jurisdiction of Raunapar police station in Azamgarh district. The gathering reportedly drew an attendance of around 40 to 50 people. Following the arrival of law enforcement, several attendees chose to leave the venue. The arrested individuals were subsequently presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.

The prayer meeting was being held at the residence of Kanti Devi in Kadipur village, according to reports. An FIR was registered under relevant sections against Kanti Devi of Kadipur, Babita Devi of Rasulpur, Suman of Turkauli, Gharbharan of Rasulpur, and Rahul of Kadipur, according to the SHO. Shiv Sagar Bharti, head of Rajdeopur Math, informed Raunapar SHO Sunil Kumar Dubey that religious conversion was allegedly taking place during the gathering. As a police team reached the spot, several people escaped. Bharti subsequently submitted a written complaint alleging religious conversion.

Dubey said Kanti had also faced action in a similar case in 2022, when she was sent to jail and secured bail after about 22 days.
