Kanpur: Police commissioner Raghubir Lal suspended Ghatampur police station sub-inspector Naveen Kumar for allegedly threatening the mother of a 13-year-old girl and pressuring her to reach a compromise in a blackmail and extortion case.
She alleged that two youths blackmailed her daughter and extorted Rs 1.52 lakh after one of them contacted her on Instagram and took screenshots of their conversation. Between Oct 1 and Oct 31, he and his associates allegedly obtained about Rs 55,000 in cash and Rs 97,000 through PhonePe and other means.
The youth threatened to circulate the screenshots and commit suicide, according to the complaint. The woman said she discovered the withdrawals after updating her bank passbook. She further alleged that Kumar told her, “I, not the police commissioner, will resolve your problem.
She approached the local police outpost, but no action was taken for three days. She alleged that outpost in-charge Shiva Singh and sub-inspector Naveen Kumar pressured the family to reach a compromise. Kumar was suspended, while an inquiry was ordered against Singh.
The woman met Lal along with her daughter, a Class V student, on Wednesday.
