Varanasi: Banaras Hindu University celebrated World Tourism Day on Sunday with a series of events highlighting India’s cultural diversity, responsible tourism, greater integration of technology and use of artificial intelligence in the tourism sector.
They said technology can help document, organise and present information on monuments, temples, festivals, traditions, cuisine, geography, hospitality and local lifestyles in more accessible and engaging ways. The programme focused on the theme ‘Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism’. Speakers underlined the growing role of AI, digital tools and academic research in shaping the future of tourism. The discussions also stressed the need for responsible use of AI. Concerns related to misinformation, deepfakes, manipulated images, inaccurate historical narratives, data privacy, intellectual property and cultural authenticity were highlighted. Speakers emphasised that AI should support human knowledge and local experience, not replace them, and that the rights, consent and participation of local communities must be respected. The event also reflected the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ and ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ with students presenting India’s diversity through costume, performance and participation. The Centre’s academic journey, recent initiatives and collaborations were recalled. Winners of competitions held as a part of the celebrations were awarded, and volunteers and contributors were felicitated on the occasion. Faculty members, staff and students attended the programme.
Organised by the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Studies, the celebrations began on Friday with a heritage walk and concluded with cultural performances at Munshi Premchand Hall, Faculty of Arts, and a cultural walk showcasing traditional attire from different Indian states.
