Stubble burning (representative image)

According to the data provided by the Consortium for Research on Agro-ecosystem Monitoring and Modelling from Space (CREAMS), a division of Agricultural Physics at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR), incidents of crop residue burning in UP fell from 1,042 in 2025 to 359 this year during a period between Sept 15 and Nov 3. Haryana , too, registered a drop of over 64% with the incidents of stubble burning coming down from 145 in 2025 to 52 during the same period, data show. The active fire incidents, essentially due to paddy residue burning, were monitored using satellite remote sensing, following the Standard Protocol for Estimation of Crop Residue Burning Fire Events using Satellite data. Delhi-NCR witnessed relatively cleaner air over the past several days due to the impact of cyclonic systems that affected the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts last week.
The associated rainfall and stronger winds helped disperse pollutants that typically accumulate over the region at this time of year. However, with the weather system weakening, wind patterns have shifted back to the north-west, carrying smoke from agricultural regions and contributing to a fresh deterioration in air quality.
