During court proceedings in 2013, Tarachand Sharma had allegedly got a purported municipal corporation certificate prepared and managed to convince a court, through his aides, that he had died in 1999. Interestingly, police at the city’s Hari Parvat also submitted a similar report on Aug 13, 2013. Soon, local police registered a fresh FIR under BNS sections 318 (cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will), 336 (forgery), 340 (forged document or electronic record) at Hari Parvat thana in 2025, and reopened the over two-decade-old case. Now 55, Sharma surrendered and the law finally caught on with him.
Subsequently, the court decided to close the forgery case that year. Verma approached the special chief judicial magistrate with the evidence and sought action against the absconding accused. The court first directed Agra police to verify the claims, and this time, rejected Sharma’s bail plea. Following the police report and evidence, the court of CJM issued warrants against Sharma.
Agra : An Agra-based shopkeeper who evaded arrest in a 1999 forgery case by submitting a “fake death certificate” has been sent to jail — 27 years later — after he surrendered before the court of CJM Shivanand Gupta on Monday. “Submitting a death certificate to evade arrest and get court proceedings closed is a serious offence. The court has now revived the proceedings after verification of the evidence and taken appropriate action against him.
His surrender and subsequent remand to jail will now allow the case to proceed in accordance with law,” Verma’s lawyer Sammer Bhatnagar told TOI on Tuesday.
