Lucknow: Election Commission has announced the schedule for elections to 11 Uttar Pradesh legislative council seats, comprising five graduate constituencies and six teachers’ constituencies, where the terms of the sitting members will end on Dec 6, 2026. The formal election notification will be issued on Tuesday.
The security deposit has been fixed at Rs 10,000 for general category candidates and Rs 5,000 for SC and ST candidates. Voters will mark their order of preference by writing numbers such as 1, 2 and 3 against candidates’ names.
Writing the first preference, marked as “1”, is mandatory for a valid vote, while subsequent preferences are optional. The graduate constituencies going to polls are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut and Allahabad-Jhansi. The teachers’ constituencies are Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Bareilly-Moradabad and Gorakhpur-Faizabad. Returning officers have been appointed for all constituencies, while district magistrates of the districts covered under each constituency will act as assistant returning officers. Nomination papers will be filed at designated divisional headquarters. Candidates contesting the election will have to submit the prescribed nomination forms. Recognised political parties are required to furnish Forms AA and BB for candidates. The None of the Above (NOTA) option will not be available in these legislative council elections.
