People travel by boat during the rescue operation by the Kanpur administration as floodwaters reach several villages in Kanpur on Saturday.

Times News Network Kanpur: Ganga crossed the warning mark on Saturday evening, with the water level at Shuklaganj in Unnao recorded at 113.08 metres, prompting the administration to ask residents of riverside Katri villages to move to higher ground. Residents were also asked to alert personnel at Flood Control Room if any problem arose. This was the second time this season that Ganga had crossed the warning mark after its water level rose continuously for five days. Fertile agricultural land in villages along Ganga Barrage has been submerged, while water has begun rising in several parts of Shuklaganj in Unnao, adjoining Kanpur. Waterlogging has persisted in several localities for about one month, forcing residents to rely on boats for transport. Several steps at ghats along Ganga in the city have also been submerged.

On Saturday, 4,20,078 cusecs of water were discharged from Ganga Barrage, while 65,482 cusecs entered Ganga from Narora and 39,553 cusecs from Haridwar. The water level is estimated to rise further over the next 1-2 days, raising the possibility of greater difficulties for residents of Katri villages along Ganga.
