Lucknow : With the aim of improving menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls, the Uttar Pradesh govt has decided to provide free sanitary napkins to all girl students in Classes 6 to 12 at govt schools across the state. The initiative will also cover adolescent girls studying in govt-aided schools, as well as those who are out of school or have dropped out.
Officials said the govt is working to ensure that menstrual health and hygiene services reach every adolescent girl, with special attention to vulnerable groups and those outside the formal education system. The decision was taken at a meeting of the State-Level Menstrual Health and Hygiene Committee, chaired by ACS, Medical Health and Family Welfare, Amit Kumar Ghosh. The meeting focused on strengthening access to health and hygiene services for adolescent girls and improving inter-departmental coordination.

The state also plans to introduce awareness and education programmes on menstruation and adolescent health as a regular part of school activities. Girls will be informed about menstruation before its onset, helping them prepare physically and mentally. Efforts will be made to promote safe menstrual practices and address myths, misconceptions and social stigma surrounding menstruation through digital and community-based communication campaigns.
