Meerut: A 29-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl aboard the New Delhi-Malda Town Express, with her mother-in-law and other women passengers helping with the delivery as the train travelled between Moradabad and Bareilly.

RPF inspector Mayank Chaudhary said, “Upon getting information, we arranged an ambulance and sent the woman and child immediately to the district hospital. Both the mother and the newborn are doing well. The family is from Mohdipur Haridaspur in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. Download the TOI App.

Railway control received information around 1.25am that the woman, travelling in coach S-6, needed medical assistance. The woman, who was in the ninth month of pregnancy, was travelling with her husband and mother-in-law from New Delhi to Malda Town when she developed labour pains early Thursday after the train left Moradabad. Officials at Bareilly Junction were alerted and an ambulance was arranged.

The baby was born before the train reached Bareilly Junction.
