Varanasi: A woman and her son were killed and three others seriously injured after their SUV broke through a divider and plunged into a nearly 40-foot-deep gorge on the Greenfield Expressway in Ghazipur district late Wednesday.
ASP (City) Rakesh Kumar Mishra said the police control room received information about the accident around 11 pm, following which a police team rushed to the spot. The deceased were identified as Kshama Upadhyay, 55, a resident of Narhi village under Narhi police station in Ballia district, and her son, Anmol, 28. The injured were identified as Ratnesh Mishra, 40, a resident of Shivpur in Varanasi; Manoj Chaubey, 42, a resident of Bharkhara village under Sukhpura police station in Ballia; and Ramesh Verma, a resident of Chunar in Mirzapur district, who was driving the SUV.
Jangipur SHO Om Prakash said the SUV was on its way from Ballia to Varanasi when it crashed. Police suspect overspeeding led to the accident and said further legal action was underway. The accident took place near Birno Toll Plaza, close to Sheikhpur, under Jangipur police station limits. The injured were taken to the District Hospital in Ghazipur, where two people died during treatment. The remaining three, who suffered serious injuries, were referred to Varanasi for advanced medical care.
