An aspirant, Swarnadeep Bhattacharya, claimed, “Jadavpur University (JU) has over 250 vacant seats. Calcutta University (CU) has over 150 vacant seats and Jalpaiguri engineering college has over 100 vacant seats. The official also said the candidates were baffled over the online decentralised counselling, introduced for the first time this year.
Aspirants have demanded to reintroduce the offline decentralised counselling according to the merit ranks after the completion of the second phase immediately. Another aspirant Deepjal Das said, “When students at central institutes and private colleges are preparing for mid-semesters, we are clueless about our academic future. ” “This issue is not limited to engineering and technology courses offered by the state institutes; it is a nationwide problem,” the official said. “The students have urged us to conduct another round of counselling,” he said, adding that the board would take a final decision on the conduct of another round after considering the total number of vacant seats. Another student Sayandeep Das said, “The ‘multiple allocation’ rule permits top-ranked candidates to hoard several simultaneous offers even when low-ranked candidates have not received even a single opportunity to upgrade to their allotted college or engineering branch. A parent, Sumit Sen Sharma, said they have urged the authorities to review the existing counselling process. Another official said it was the most transparent process of decentralised admission as candidates could see the entire list of vacant seats.
They urged the chairman to change the decentralised counselling from online to offline mode for faster filling up of vacant seats. Kolkata: WBJEE aspirants met the board chairman and other officials on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Jadavpur University will begin their 2026-27 academic session for the first-year engineering students from Sept 28 with centralised induction and orientation programme classes. First-year classes will begin from Oct 12.
