Jalpaiguri : A joint BSF-Bengal police team arrested a transgender person for alleged involvement in money laundering, gold smuggling and possession of forged identity documents following a 10 hours-long search in an area predominantly inhabited by members of the trans community in Jalpaiguri’s Uttar Raikat Para on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Pipasa Halder, allegedly was in possession of two country-made pistols, three rounds of live ammunition and two Bangladeshi SIM cards, according to authorities. Sources said the searches were carried out after BSF and the directorate of revenue intelligence received a tip-off about Halder’s alleged involvement in money laundering and gold smuggling across north Bengal districts and Bangladesh. Authorities alleged that Halder was in touch with “handlers” in Bangladesh and Pakistan and had even visited Pakistan last month. Jalpaiguri SP Sujata Kumari Veenapani said a case was registered under relevant sections and further investigation was underway.
