A small spill of turmeric, flour or cooking oil can be annoying to scrub off a wooden or laminated surface. With foil underneath, much of that mess lands on a disposable layer instead. This hack is particularly handy for the inside of cabinets where dry ingredients, spices and cooking supplies are stored. It can also be useful on open shelves that are prone to collecting dust and crumbs. For shelves underneath frequently used appliances or areas where food is prepared, a removable liner can be especially convenient. On delicate or highly polished surfaces, check the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations first. Aluminium foil can also slide around more easily than dedicated shelf liners, so it may not be ideal for shelves where containers are frequently moved.

It is particularly useful for shelves near the cooking area, where airborne grease can settle over time. Instead of having to scrub a sticky film from the shelf itself, you can periodically remove the foil and replace it. It can also make deep cleaning less frequent. You will still need to wipe the shelves occasionally, but the protective layer can make everyday maintenance quicker.
