A missed electricity transfer, a forgotten address update or a box labelled “misc” can turn the first week in your new home into a scramble. Moving house is exciting, but it is also a long list of small jobs that can pile up fast. A little planning makes the move far smoother. Here are five essential things to do when shifting, from packing and utilities to cleaning, paperwork and safety.

Pack an “essentials” bag with medicines, chargers, documents, toiletries, a change of clothes and basic kitchen items, so you are not hunting through boxes on the first night. Start at least a few weeks ahead. Make a checklist with dates, decide what you will keep, donate or discard, and book packers or a vehicle early, especially during festival season or month-end when demand is high. Pack room by room, label every box with its room and contents, and keep fragile items and heavy books in smaller boxes. Take photos of your electronics’ wiring before you disconnect them.

Safety comes first. Change or re-key the locks, or at least check that all doors and windows lock properly, and note emergency numbers, including the building security and the nearest hospital. Check electrical switches, extension cords and gas connections, and keep a small first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher where you can reach them. If you have children or pets, secure balconies, windows and sockets. Then make it feel like home: set up the bed, kitchen and bathroom first, hang curtains for privacy, add a few plants or familiar decorations, and unpack a little each day instead of everything at once.
