From rhinestone-studded cakes to crystal-covered accessories, bedazzling is having a moment, and Chennai is joining the trend. Inspired by the sparkle flooding social media, two workshops in the city invited participants to swap scrolling for glue, gemstones and a little creativity. The result? Everyday glass sippers and bento cakes transformed into personalised, Instagram-worthy creations.
For homemaker Jezeera, it was a welcome change from her routine. “It was nice to sit down and do something just for myself. Once I got started, I really enjoyed it,” she shares.
It’s nice that I can actually use the sipper afterwards instead of making something that will just sit on a shelf,” she says. For fine arts student Azra the personalisation was the best part. “I really like leopard print, especially on clothes and accessories, so I wanted to do something along those lines. For entrepreneur Farwah, the workshop was a chance to turn a birthday idea into something personal. “My friend’s birthday is coming up, and she loves these bedazzled cakes. I thought it would be much nicer to try making one for her myself rather than just ordering one. Hopefully, I can recreate it at home!” she shares. For Rida, cake bedazzling brings baking and art together. “I’ve always believed that cakes are more than just desserts; they’re a canvas for creativity. With the bedazzled cake trend gaining popularity, especially the glamorous, jewel-inspired designs we’ve seen on social media, I wanted to bring that concept to our workshops and give it our own twist. They want to try something new, spend quality time with friends and leave with a memory they can take home,” she explains.
People today are looking for experiences rather than just places to visit.
