Kobe Bryant would have turned 48 on Sunday, and his wife Vanessa marked it the only way she knows how, with a photo that says more than any caption could. She shared a throwback shot of them tangled together on a lawn chair, laughing, impossibly young. Six years have passed since Kobe and their daughter Gianna died in a helicopter crash near Calabasas, and the ache clearly has not faded for Vanessa or the basketball world that once orbited around him. Tributes poured in fast, from former teammates to fans still holding on to what he meant. The photo Vanessa Bryant posted showed her sitting on Kobe’s lap during a lazy afternoon outdoors, both of them grinning at whoever was holding the camera.
