Because kuminga reportedly turned down more lucrative opportunities, the decision to choose Minnesota became more notable. Kuminga’s decision, therefore, reflects the current direction of the two teams rather than their historic resumes.
The Timberwolves have made five straight playoff appearances and won at least one series in three consecutive seasons, including two trips to the Western Conference finals.
“I think this was the best decision for me,” he said. “I would say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made, just looking at the roster, looking at the young group of guys they have,” Kuminga said. The Timberwolves added the star guard via a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, and Kuminga said he was impressed by Ball’s passing during a workout. I think this was one of the best winning cultures I could have chose out of all the options. I spoke to so many people on this team, including front office, coaches, some of the players, and the vibe was just the type of vibe I was looking for. Minnesota has built a strong recent record under Tim Connelly and Chris Finch. “Seeing what they’ve done in the past and things they’re trying to accomplish going forward. I think I fit well with this culture and I can come here and help win as many games as we can. “I think the choice was, we’re trying to win. Trying to help winning. That’s why I made this decision. Kuminga also offered an early glimpse at what excites him about his new teammates, particularly Ball. “I mean, I’ve played with so many point guards in my career, but I never played with somebody that could pass as good as LaMelo. So, I think I’m looking forward to it, and I’m excited. His comment also adds another layer to the expectations surrounding Minnesota after an active offseason. For now, Kuminga is focused on making the most of his opportunity. He was asked about staying with the Timberwolves beyond the upcoming season, but he avoided looking too far ahead. The Timberwolves agreed to a two-year, $12.4 million deal with Kuminga this offseason, according to ESPN. The contract includes a $6.3 million player option for the second season, giving him an important decision after the upcoming campaign. Kuminga could enter free agency again next offseason or choose to return for the 2026-27 NBA season. The move gives Minnesota an NBA champion who already has significant experience despite being only 23.
His agent, Aaron Turner, said Kuminga had a clear preference after considering his options.
