At 42, Rodgers is delivering strong results, throwing at least three touchdown passes in each of his last three games. Former Green Bay Packers teammate James Jones believes the quarterback could remain in the NFL until he is 49 or 50, thanks to his natural arm talent and ability to make plays under pressure. There is one catch: Rodgers has already said he plans to retire after the 2026 season.
Aaron Rodgers ’ recent run with the Pittsburgh Steelers has renewed the debate over how much longer the veteran quarterback can play. Jones knows what Rodgers can do when he is in rhythm. The former Packers wide receiver played alongside him during Green Bay’s Super Bowl-winning run and watched him develop into one of the NFL’s most accomplished passers. His latest comments suggest that Rodgers’ age is less of a concern than many might assume. “Now you have a quarterback that you can lean on and say, ‘Hey, if we are down, we got to score some points. Aaron Rodgers can deliver and do that for you. So it’s a good Steelers team, man.”
However, Jones also understands that a strong quarterback cannot carry a team alone. Pittsburgh’s defense, featuring T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward, remains an important part of the Steelers’ hopes this season. For Pittsburgh, the immediate focus is clear. The Steelers have a quarterback playing well enough to give them a chance, and the decisions they make around him could shape how far that opportunity goes. Rodgers may have more football left in him than some expect, but his stated retirement plan means the team cannot afford to treat this season as an endless window.
Still, the question of Rodgers playing until 50 remains separate from his current form. He has said the 2026 season will be his last, and there has been no confirmed change to that plan. Jones’ belief reflects the confidence former teammates still have in Rodgers’ ability, not a sign that retirement is off the table.
