Donna Kelce put her own happiness on hold to give Jason and Travis Kelce a better life, but her story of a mother’s sacrifice goes far beyond football
Donna and Ed Kelce were married for nearly 25 years. Donna explained this decision during her October 2024 interview with Glamour for its Mothers of the Year feature.
She said, “My husband and I knew that our marriage was not working, but we stayed together for the kids.” Long before Jason Kelce and Travis Kelce became Super Bowl champions and household names, their mother, Donna Kelce, was quietly making sacrifices that shaped their lives. She spent years balancing a demanding banking career, raising two boys with big sporting dreams and putting her family’s needs ahead of her own happiness. He revealed that Donna had spent more than 40 years in banking, starting as a teller and eventually reaching the position of vice president. Because she had children, her professional journey was not something she wanted to give up simply.
Jason said, “And from my mother, I learned the all too important lesson of never letting anyone tell you what you can’t do. She also made it clear that their relationship was friendly, which helped them continue raising their children together. It was not a situation where the boys were left without support from either parent. Donna and Ed worked as a team, making sure their sons could focus on school, sports and their future. For Donna, those years meant putting her personal life on hold. She did not hide how that affected her. During the same Glamour interview, she admitted, “But in that one respect, I did stand still for several years until I could move on on my own. It is perhaps one of the most emotional parts of her story. She knew she wanted something different for herself, but she and Ed chose to wait until their sons had finished college and moved out before going their separate ways. Their marriage eventually ended, but their relationship as parents continued. Donna was also building a career of her own While raising Jason and Travis. She worked as a commercial banker across several states and steadily moved into senior positions. In fact, she wanted her sons to grow up seeing that a woman could have a successful career, earn her own money and make important decisions for herself. Donna spoke about the effort she put into her work during her Glamour interview, saying, “I was a commercial banker for a bank in several different states. I wanted to get ahead. I worked really, really hard. She was also a major breadwinner in the family, meaning that much of the financial responsibility rested on her shoulders. Between her job and her responsibilities at home, there was little room to put herself first. He also shared something about her childhood that helps explain where her determination came from. When Donna wanted to attend college, her father was against the idea. He believed she should become a secretary or a wife instead. However, Donna went ahead with her education and graduated from Ohio University. Her journey did not end there. She later earned an MBA from Baldwin Wallace University and continued working her way up in the banking industry. With Jason’s Eagles facing Travis’s Chiefs, she supported both sons by wearing a custom jersey featuring their names and team colors. But that famous moment was only a small part of a much longer journey. Donna had been there through their childhood games, college years, NFL dreams and difficult moments along the way.
