NFL Trade Rumors (Getty Images)
The Kansas City Chiefs have until November 10 to address a defensive problem that is becoming difficult to ignore. The 35-year-old Los Angeles Chargers linebacker is playing on an $18 million deal, and a move could give Andy Reid’s team an experienced pass-rusher without requiring a major long-term commitment. ESPN’s Benjamin Solak highlighted the issue after the Chiefs’ Week 8 loss to Denver, noting that Kansas City pressured Nix on just two of his 34 dropbacks. That was a striking drop from the pressure rate the team recorded against him in Week 1.
Because of the rivalry between the teams, a fifth-round pick could be a reasonable starting point, although the Chargers might demand a fourth-round selection. After opening the season with four sacks against Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, Kansas City has managed only five sacks across its next six games. That lack of pressure has made Khalil Mack a possible trade target as the deadline approaches. Kansas City’s need goes beyond its sack total. The defense has struggled to disrupt opposing quarterbacks, giving offenses too much time to find open receivers and develop plays. Mack could offer some relief. The former Defensive Player of the Year is no longer at the peak of his powers, but he remains capable of making an impact. He has recorded five tackles for loss and three sacks through seven games this season. The Chiefs also have a reason to consider a short-term solution. Mack is playing on a one-year contract and could enter free agency next spring or consider retirement. Kansas City would be acquiring a veteran for the current campaign rather than committing to a long-term deal. Trading Mack would allow the team to gain a draft pick rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency. Still, helping Kansas City strengthen its defense is a different matter.
Los Angeles has reportedly been reluctant to trade away assets before the deadline, despite a winless start that has left its season in serious trouble.
