Before he became a Kansas City Chiefs star, Kelce was dealing with a major setback at Cincinnati and working an $8-an-hour telemarketing job. He has since looked back at that period as the moment he realised he needed to grow up, change his approach and make football count. Travis Kelce is now one of the NFL’s biggest personalities, but the confidence, humour and energy that fans see today came after a period when he had to seriously rethink his life. What followed was a transformation that eventually helped shape the player and personality he is today.
Travis Kelce’s $8-an-hour job forced the “knucklehead” to rethink his future
In 2010, while at Cincinnati, Kelce lost his scholarship and was away from the football team. Instead of spending his days on the field, he took a telemarketing job where he earned $8 an hour and sat in a small cubicle conducting surveys. Looking back at that period for ESPN in 2017, Kelce made an important distinction about the job. That’s not to hit on anybody’s 9-to-5; that’s just not for me. Kelce returned to Cincinnati, rebuilt his football career and eventually entered the NFL Draft, where the Chiefs selected him in the third round in 2013. Ahead of Super Bowl 58 in February 2024, Kelce revealed something that seemed surprising considering how naturally he handles huge crowds and cameras. The player who once sat in an $8-an-hour telemarketing cubicle wondering where his life was going eventually became one of the most accomplished tight ends of his generation.
Because he had spent virtually his entire life playing sports, eSPN’s Elizabeth Merrill reported that Kelce found the experience depressing.
In fact, he has openly referred to himself as a “knucklehead,” and one of the biggest turning points in his life came when football was suddenly taken away from him. He said, “All I had been doing is playing outside, playing sports my entire life. He said he had actually been a shy kid growing up and credited his mother, Donna Kelce, for helping him become comfortable in front of cameras through the home videos she recorded. And that’s just kind of propelled me to have confidence in life,” Kelce said. Kelce has never tried to pretend that he was perfectly disciplined as a young man. I had never sat down and tried to earn a living like that. That experience made him think about what he wanted from his future. Kelce understood that if he wanted football to remain part of his life, he could not keep making the same mistakes. He summed up that realisation with a line that now feels almost like the starting point of his NFL story: “The light at the end of the tunnel was that if I do what I’m supposed to do instead of being a knucklehead, I can have a way better life than this. That was the change in mindset he needed. The most interesting part of Kelce’s story is that growing up did not mean becoming a completely different person. The personality was always there. He simply learned how to use it in a way that helped rather than hurt him. Asked how he became so comfortable with a microphone and camera around him, Kelce replied, “My mom’s home videos, man. He explained that having a camera around him while growing up meant he was constantly seeing himself and getting used to being recorded. But Kelce also pointed to another major source of his confidence: sports. He explained that he was shy until he stepped onto a field, court or ice rink, where he could let his personality come out while having fun and finding success. “Then I kind of let my personality show. I was having fun. I was having success. Kelce did not lose the playful personality that had been there since childhood. He learned to channel that energy into football, competition and eventually the enormous platform that came with becoming a Chiefs star. His journey was not simply about becoming more confident. It was about recognising that he had a future worth fighting for and finally deciding to take it seriously. In many ways, it was where his NFL story really began.
