The couple married on April 3, 2026, at Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa in California, months after Sam Darnold led Seattle to a Super Bowl title. Darnold played for the Carolina Panthers during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, which placed both of them in the same city at the same time. The couple reportedly went public with their relationship in 2023, when Hoofnagle posted a carousel of photos on Darnold’s 26th birthday.
They first met at a bar in Charlotte, North Carolina, after being introduced by a mutual friend.
“Going home to the San Francisco Bay Area after graduating college would’ve provided me with countless opportunities for professional growth, but not the personal growth I knew I needed,” she wrote on LinkedIn. But before any of that happened, there was Charlotte. That detail alone reframes everything. Most people assume the story starts in Seattle or even San Francisco, but it actually traces back to a city that rarely comes up in Sam Darnold’s current narrative. After graduating from the University of South Carolina, Hoofnagle made a deliberate choice to plant roots in Charlotte rather than return to the Bay Area. She added: “At the end of the day, I felt like there was more to life than just my career and I knew I needed to dig my roots somewhere new. What was meant to be a short term plan in an unfamiliar city turned into a home I never want to leave. Two people from California, both with ties to a USC, both landing in Charlotte at the same moment. It is not the kind of love story you script. By that point, Darnold had already moved on to the 49ers, meaning they navigated at least part of their early relationship long-distance.
Just days before the Seattle Seahawks’ season opener against the New England Patriots, Katie Hoofnagle posted a black-and-white wedding photo gallery on Instagram, giving fans their first real look at a ceremony that had been months in the making.
She graduated in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, majoring in marketing. The ceremony was a no-phone affair with 227 guests at Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
“She’s a former athlete herself, and just gets kind of the grind of everything,” he said. Katie Hoofnagle attended Monte Vista High School in Danville, California, before heading to the University of South Carolina, where she was a fixture on the women’s club soccer team. That athletic background matters to Sam Darnold. “When I just want to chill, she’s very up for that, especially during the season. After graduating, she moved to Charlotte and took a job at Loan Pronto, where she eventually became a mortgage loan officer. She later transitioned into tech, and currently works as a marketing specialist for the company Renvio. She is also quietly building her own profile. Considering the Seahawks played the Patriots in the Super Bowl, the campaign had an obvious irony to it that she leaned into. The guest list read like a league directory. Among the attendees were Josh Allen, Hailee Steinfeld, Christian McCaffrey, Luke Kuechly, Christian Kirk, Cooper Kupp, Drew Lock and Adam Ray. Kuechly’s presence was a small nod to that Charlotte chapter in their story, given his long history with the Panthers. After the ceremony, Katie Hoofnagle posted a single photo of her ring to her Instagram Stories with a caption that was blunt and endearing: “I have a husband now, btw. Now, ahead of the Seahawks’ season opener against the Patriots, she posted the wedding gallery. Black and white photographs. Sam Darnold in a tuxedo. Katie in a lace gown. Before the Super Bowl, she appeared in an Instagram ad for DoorDash alongside Ann Michael Maye, the wife of New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye. A moment preserved before the next chapter begins.
