In an October 2024 interview, the football stars’ mother offered a rare glimpse into that chapter of her life, explaining why the couple chose to remain together despite knowing their relationship was no longer working. Donna and Ed Kelce spent 25 years together before eventually ending their marriage. Speaking to Glamour for its Women of the Year cover story in October 2024, Donna explained how the arrangement affected her personally. The 71-year-old also spoke about her professional life. Donna later discussed the decision during an appearance on The Martha Stewart Podcast in May 2024.
“My husband and I knew that our marriage was not working, but we stayed together for the kids,” Donna explained in her Glamour Women of the Year cover story. Raising two children while managing a demanding career is never easy. For Donna Kelce, the challenge also meant putting her own happiness on hold for years. Long before her sons, Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce, became household names in the NFL, Donna and their father, Ed Kelce, faced difficulties in their marriage. However, their decision to stay under the same roof was not driven by the belief that everything was perfect between them. Instead, they wanted to give Travis and Jason a stable childhood. “Ours was a very friendly relationship. So, we could do that and make sure that their life was normal as possible. But in that one respect, I did stand still for several years until I could move on on my own. Her words offered a different perspective on the sacrifices parents sometimes make behind closed doors. Donna admitted that remaining in the marriage meant delaying important personal decisions Although she and Ed maintained a friendly relationship. She worked as a commercial banker across several states and carried a significant share of the family’s financial responsibilities. “I was a commercial banker for a bank in several different states. I wanted to get ahead. I worked really, really hard. I was a major breadwinner in the family,” she shared. “And I think it’s important for kids to see that a woman can do whatever she wants, but I did stand still, too. She described raising two children as a shared responsibility and explained why she and Ed chose to delay their separation.

“We worked together as a team and it’s very, very difficult to raise children on your own,” Donna said on The Martha Stewart Podcast in May. “I started making those connections when I was in middle school and realized they were probably gonna split,” he shared. “We decided that we would be married throughout the entire time that the kids were in the house, and that’s the way it worked out. He recalled noticing certain differences at home during his middle school years, including the fact that his parents did not share a bedroom. “But they stayed together for me and Jason’s benefit, I believe. Looking back, Donna’s comments highlighted the years of compromise behind the Kelce family’s journey. Her story also showed that while Travis and Jason built successful NFL careers, their parents’ efforts to provide a steady childhood remained an important part of their upbringing.
