15, 2024, a day after a shooting at the team’s Super Bowl victory parade. In a statement to PEOPLE published on February 17, 2024, the Reyes family explained how much the visit meant to their daughters. In an earlier statement shared with media outlets on February 16, the family said it was relieved by the girls’ progress while acknowledging the emotional strain of the shooting.
Their family later revealed that the surprise visit brought the girls their first smiles since the shooting, giving them a happy moment during a difficult recovery.
“In a time where they are traumatized, saddened, and worried, having a surprise appearance from Patrick and Brittany Mahomes brought the first smile to their faces since tragedy struck,” the family said. However, the family said the girls were excited to show their loved ones Patrick’s signatures. “While we are relieved by their progress, the emotional healing continues for all of us,” the family said.
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes visited two young Kansas City Chiefs fans at Children’s Mercy Hospital on Feb. Sisters Madison Reyes and Melia Reyes had undergone surgery after gunshot wounds to their legs. The sisters faced several months in casts after their surgeries. The visit offered a personal moment of comfort for the children, but their recovery continued well beyond that day. The statement also asked the public to keep the injured girls and other affected families in their thoughts and prayers. For the Reyes family, the support came as Madison and Melia faced a long recovery from injuries suffered during what should have been a celebration of their team’s championship. The Mahomeses’ visit gave the sisters a welcome moment of happiness, while the wider fundraising effort helped address the challenges their family faced after the shooting.
