Patrick Mahomes’ latest NFL edge reveals what makes the Chiefs quarterback so difficult for rivals to keep up with (Getty Images)
CBS Sports writer Garrett Podell highlighted the number after Week 6, calling out how normal Mahomes looks after his ACL tear. Walker, a Super Bowl MVP, left Seattle in free agency and has run for 665 yards and six touchdowns in five games with Kansas City, according to Sports Illustrated. That works out to 133 rushing yards a game. The Seahawks sit at 3-3 after six games, multiple games out of first in the NFC West, yet they opened as 1.5-point favorites, and the line has since moved to 2.5 at home.
Leading the league in that area says plenty about how the recovery has gone. Seattle is not a pushover, at least according to the odds. Patrick Mahomes leads the NFL in completions outside the pocket, and the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs are leaning on it. The timing is useful for Kansas City. A perfect record is on the line, and Mahomes is a big reason it has lasted this long. The CBS Sports report puts Patrick Mahomes first in the league at completing passes outside the pocket. That is the claim, and it is a specific one. Plenty of quarterbacks can slip away from pressure. Far fewer can do it and still find an open receiver. There is a quieter point under the numbers. Throwing on the run asks a lot of the legs, and the knee is the thing an ACL tear takes away. Mahomes is not carrying this offense alone. Henry McKenna of Fox Sports pointed to running back Kenneth Walker III as a key piece. Sam Darnold quarterbacks them, and their former running back will be on the other sideline.
The Chiefs visit the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, and oddsmakers have the home team favored by a small margin.
