Patrick Mahomes set up 15 and the Mahomies Foundation in 2019 with one clear aim: to improve the lives of children. Its signature program, 15 for 15, backs 15 youth initiatives covering school, science, the arts, sports and after-school care.
The foundation says it exists to improve children’s lives. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback pointed the charity at health, wellness and communities that lack resources. The name carries his jersey number, and the number shows up everywhere in how the foundation works. Seven years on, the mission still centers on giving kids chances they might not get otherwise, on the field and far from it. That sounds broad, and it is meant to be. Support goes toward health and wellness projects, classroom needs, and communities short on resources.
The 15 for 15 model makes it concrete. Each initiative helps 15 people or 15 organizations. The first sponsored 15 athletes in the Special Olympics. Year-round entry costs $460 per athlete, so those athletes did not have to worry about the fee. Another 2019 effort sent 15 kids from the Boys & Girls Club of Lubbock to Texas Tech home games. When the foundation launched, the suggested donation was $15, which kept the theme intact. Read for 15 is a virtual, 15-week program. Children, classrooms and parents take a pledge to read for 15 minutes a day outside school. The foundation also provides management support for Read for 15 in Kansas City schools. The foundation teams up with Youth Volunteer Corps, and kids aged 11 to 18 commit 15 hours of service. The 15 for 15 initiatives add the experiences in between, like a seat at a college football game. “We focus on education, we focus on athletics,” Fitch said. He also says the team keeps stressing the good sports can do in a child’s life. “Providing memorable experiences for deserving kids is a big part of our mission,” he said. The foundation says that teaches respect, kindness and leadership, along with a better understanding of people who are different. “Whitehouse will always have a special place in Patrick’s heart,” Fitch said.
Executive Director Marques Fitch has explained the focus in plain terms. He then added the arts and the unique experiences many children would never get to try. Mahomes played college ball there. Fans can join in too. Parents get a role too, which matters for a habit that has to survive a busy weeknight. The aim is simple: more kids who love books and do well in class. Here, young people are the helpers. Put together, the programs cover a child’s week. Reading builds a habit at home. Service builds one in the community. The reach goes beyond Kansas City. In Whitehouse, Texas, the foundation has donated shoes to students in the district where Mahomes grew up. Get the latest Sports News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.
