Shedeur Sanders makes unexpected gesture for Glenville after 11 players face charges in $4,500 sports store theft
Shedeur Sanders has stepped in to support his hometown program after 11 Glenville players faced theft charges, donating about 50 pairs of Nike cleats to the team. The Cleveland Browns quarterback’s gesture comes days after the players were accused of taking more than $4,500 worth of merchandise from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store. On August 27, 11 members of the team were accused of taking merchandise from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Grove City, Ohio, while the team was in the area for a game against Olentangy Liberty. The Cleveland Metropolitan School District later announced consequences for all 11 players. Martin and Hankins are scheduled to appear in Grove City Mayor’s Court on September 16.
The district said the players left supervision during the team trip and would face disciplinary action. The gift comes at a difficult time for the Tarblooders. Each student was suspended from school and made ineligible to play in two Glenville football games. The case also remains separate from Sanders’ donation, which gives the players new equipment while they deal with the consequences of the alleged theft. Glenville is a three-time state champion program, and its football identity has long been tied to Cleveland. The latest incident has put the team under extra attention, but Sanders’ support gives the players something positive to take onto the field as they work through the fallout.
