ESPN, Lucasfilm, Disney and the NFL will present Star Wars Funday Football, an animated alternate broadcast that recreates every play of the February 14, 2027, championship game in real time. From October 26, the show will also feature an animated Darth Vader interviewing an NFL player taking part in that night’s Monday Night Football game. Because the format is moving from selected regular-season games to the NFL’s biggest annual event, eSPN, Disney and the league previously teamed up for Toy Story Funday Football in 2023, The Simpsons Funday Football Super Bowl LXI marks a significant expansion.

Disney is giving Super Bowl LXI a twist that goes well beyond its usual halftime entertainment. NFL players will appear as animated avatars inside the Star Wars universe, with familiar characters joining the action. The broadcast will stream on Disney+ and the ESPN App and air on Disney Channel and Disney XD. It will run alongside the traditional coverage from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The project takes ESPN’s Funday Football concept to its biggest stage yet. Rather than simply adding Star Wars graphics to a regular broadcast, the production will recreate the game itself as an animated experience. Every play will be represented in real time, with players transformed into digital versions of themselves and franchise characters appearing at key moments. It gives ESPN another way to blend sports coverage with entertainment, using a recognisable character to draw viewers into weekly football discussions. The challenge is to make the animation appealing without losing the detail that serious fans expect from a live football broadcast.

The approach builds on earlier animated NFL presentations.

Sony’s Beyond Sports will combine player-tracking data from NFL Next Gen Stats with optical tracking from Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations to turn live action into animation. That means the presentation is designed to follow the actual game rather than show a pre-planned cartoon version of football.
