Steve Belichick’s UNC absence raises fresh questions before Clemson as Ty Nichols reveals Bill Belichick’s defensive approach

North Carolina is 2-0 and heading into its first ACC game, but one major question is still hanging over Bill Belichick’s team. North Carolina opened the season with a 15-10 win over TCU and then beat East Tennessee State 35-3. The Tar Heels have given up only 13 points in two games, making the defense one of the strongest parts of the team so far. Former UNC general manager Michael Lombardi resigned on September 3 after being placed on administrative leave.
Nichols said the Tar Heels’ defensive staff has continued to work together despite Steve Belichick being away. “It’s been a collaborative effort with the defense since I’ve been here,” Nichols said. Reports have also said investigators were looking into other allegations involving people connected to the program. Christopher Vizzina suffered an injury to his non throwing elbow against Georgia Southern and is expected to miss the UNC game, according to reports.
Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has been away from the Tar Heels since August, and there is still no clear timeline for his return. Ahead of Saturday’s game against Clemson, outside linebackers coach Ty Nichols explained how the defense has managed without him. He explained that the group has always shared responsibilities, which has helped the unit deal with the change. “We have a small defensive staff. There’s not a lot of us, so we each have our hand in pretty much everything that goes on within the defense. So, in terms of anything else like that, coach (Bill Belichick) is mandating it and running it and doing all that kind of stuff. For now, the results on the field have been encouraging. The investigation is not limited to Steve. That leaves the Tar Heels preparing for Clemson with their defensive coordinator still absent. The Tigers are dealing with their own quarterback issue, too. Freshman Tait Reynolds is expected to make his first career start.
