Why would the Chiefs sign Tyreek Hill even if he is not 100 percent healthy?
Baltimore came out of Week 1 looking like a Super Bowl contender. Whether he plays 15 snaps a game or lines up as a decoy, his presence shifts how defenses prepare.
Fowler noted Hill “remains fond of the Chiefs,” and an October signing would let him ease back into things without the pressure of a cold start somewhere new. Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay identified five teams that make the most sense for Hill right now: the Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, Dallas Cowboys, and Baltimore Ravens. Each has a legitimate case. But the Ravens stand out from the rest, and not by a small margin. Then Zay Flowers went down injured, and so did promising rookie Ja’Kobi Lane. Suddenly, what was already a thin receiving corps got thinner. As Kay put it: “Considering the injuries this already-thin receiving corps has been dealing with, adding Hill as soon as he’s ready to play again should be atop the Baltimore front office’s to-do list. That is a hard argument to dismiss. Lamar Jackson with Tyreek Hill is a genuinely scary thought for the rest of the AFC. The Ravens have the quarterback, the run game, and now a clear need. Hill plugs directly into that gap. Still, the Chiefs have something no other team can offer: familiarity. Hill knows that offense. He knows Patrick Mahomes . Kansas City’s case for bringing Hill back goes beyond football ability. The Chiefs’ passing attack has real uncertainty right now. Their receiver room is young and unproven at the top. Hill, even at reduced capacity coming off a serious knee injury, adds a dimension that no one currently on the roster provides. Hill is not going to command anything close to what he earned in Miami. A player coming back from a severe knee injury, not available until at least October, simply does not have that kind of leverage. For Kansas City, a short-term, low-risk deal could pay off far beyond what it costs on paper. There is also a strategic layer worth considering. Keeping Hill away from a team like Baltimore is a legitimate reason on its own. Veteran leadership for younger receivers is another quiet benefit that rarely shows up in box scores but absolutely shows up in locker rooms. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported this week that Hill remains open to returning to Kansas City, where he spent the first six years of his career. Tyreek Hill is a free agent, nursing a knee injury, and not expected back until October. Yet his name keeps coming up in front offices across the league. The Chiefs, dealing with real questions at wide receiver, have reasons to listen. But they are not alone. At least five other teams are already circling.
