Buffalo’s $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium had its first regular-season home game on September 17 against the Detroit Lions, and while Josh Allen stole the show on the field, one couple made sure the stands had their own headline. The game ended 41-31 in Buffalo’s favour. They’re planning a summer 2028 wedding.
The Bills won big that night, with Allen accounting for five touchdowns.
“I have to extend the invitation to some of the Bills players, you know, whoever can make it,” he said. Gage Caldwell proposed to Sarah Cole during the Bills’ long-awaited home opener, turning a historic night for Bills Mafia into something far more personal. But for at least two people in that crowd, the final score was almost secondary. But what gave this story its texture was everything before kickoff. Cole and Caldwell weren’t strangers chasing a viral clip. They were two people whose relationship had grown, date by date, game by game, through Bills wins and losses. Proposing at Highmark’s opener wasn’t a stunt. It was the natural next step. And Caldwell already has his sights on who to put on the guest list.
“A lot of our dates have been circled around going to Bills games,” Cole told WIVB. “My brother and I share the tickets, and he wasn’t able to make it, so I immediately figured that she would be the one taking his spot,” Caldwell said. “The guys at security, they were like the best wingmen I could have asked for,” Caldwell said. “I had a thought that maybe it could happen,” she said. When Caldwell got down on one knee surrounded by thousands of Bills fans, she said yes, even if the moment hit so hard she could barely process it. “When it happened, I blacked out, and I couldn’t even remember if I said yes,” Cole recalled. “I was just so happy.”
Their relationship was built around this team. Cole and Caldwell have known each other since high school and have been together for about a year and a half, with Bills games woven into their dates almost from day one. “Actually, our second date was at a Bills game. Caldwell shares season tickets with his brother. When his brother couldn’t make the home opener, Caldwell saw his opening. Not just to bring Cole along, but to pop the question in the one place that meant the most to both of them. What almost derailed the whole plan was the ring itself. Walking through security at Highmark, the diamond triggered the equipment. For a second, the surprise teetered on the edge. Then the security staff figured out what was happening and quietly waved him through. “Once they saw the diamond, they were like, ‘Oh yeah, you’re good, man. You’re good.'” Cole had even sensed something was coming. “How cool would it be to get engaged at the first home opener at the new Highmark Stadium? Her gut was right.
