He joined the company in April 2022, performing on the SmackDown brand. From 2016 until 2019, Rhodes wrestled on the independent circuit and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA), and Ring of Honor (ROH) under the mononym Cody. He is also known for co-founding and serving as executive vice president and wrestler with All Elite Wrestling (AEW) from 2019 until 2022. He and Dustin did not grow up together in the traditional sense, with their 16-year age gap contributing to their different childhood experiences, according to Cody.
Cody brought up Dusty’s famous “The View Never Changes” promo with Dustin, which he considers one of the greatest wrestling promos ever delivered. Rather than keeping his children completely removed from wrestling, Cody said he is comfortable with them sharing parts of his career and appearing on television. Speaking recently with Santino Marella on What Do You Wanna Talk About? Cody discussed how the wrestling business affected his family while reflecting on his relationship with his older half-brother, Dustin Rhodes. Cody explained that much of the brothers’ relationship effectively played out in the public eye. Speaking to Marella, The American Nightmare stated, “One of the things, though, that I found before I ever had kids, and it’s largely now present as well that I do wrestling can tear the you can take the family away from each other. “But in my case, a lot of my family lived their life on screen. So people don’t realize as far as my brother and I didn’t grow up together. We didn’t have Thanksgivings together. We didn’t; the age gap was too much. Our, what’s the age gap? Sixteen years. Wow. Us being brothers was on television. Was on TV. He further threw light on Dusty’s relationship with his brother Dustin Rhodes. Cody stated that Dustin’s relationship was more painful. But, sadly, it was a shoot and was not made for television. ”So Dusty has a promo with Dustin, the ‘View Never Changes’ promo. I think it’s the best promo of all time. Cody further acknowledged that he received a different upbringing from his father than Dustin did. He recalled traveling with Dusty and being able to experience the wrestling world alongside him, something his older brother did not have. However, the difficult relationship between Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes eventually improved and the family was able to reconnect. The American Nightmare also shared his own experiences with Dusty influencing the way he approaches fatherhood.
