‘The Times of India’ brings you ‘Hack of the Day’ — a new weekday-series of quick, practical solutions to everyday hassles. Each hack is designed to save you time, money or stress, using tools and features within your reach — from government websites to everyday apps. In simple words it is: Simple fixes for smarter living.

Follow these steps: Step 1: Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal and log in using your User ID (generally your PAN) and password. Step 2: After logging in, navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns. Step 3: Select the relevant Assessment Year for which you want to check the refund. Step 4: Click View Details to see the status of your filed ITR.

Because it is not linked with Aadhaar, one of the most common reasons is that the taxpayer’s PAN has become inoperative.

Refund processing begins only after the taxpayer has successfully e-verified the filed return, according to the Income Tax Department. Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is only one part of the tax filing process. If you have paid more tax than your actual tax liability through Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), Tax Collected at Source (TCS), Advance Tax or Self-Assessment Tax, you may be eligible for an income tax refund. However, the refund is processed only after the Income Tax Department completes the necessary checks. In most cases, the refund is credited to the taxpayer’s bank account within four to five weeks after e-verification. If the refund is delayed or fails, taxpayers can track its status through the Income Tax e-filing portal. Before checking the refund status, ensure you have a valid user ID and password for the Income Tax e-filing portal, that your PAN is linked to Aadhaar, and that you have filed an ITR claiming a refund. The page will display whether your return is still being processed, whether the refund has been issued, partially adjusted, fully adjusted or has failed. It also shows the lifecycle of the filed return. The Income Tax Department notes that refund failures can occur for several reasons. In such cases, the portal displays a warning message, and the refund cannot be processed until the PAN-Aadhaar linkage is completed. Refunds may also fail if: The bank account selected for receiving the refund has not been pre-validated.

The account holder’s name does not match the details available in the PAN database. An incorrect or invalid IFSC code has been provided. The bank account mentioned in the ITR has been closed. If your refund is not credited after the usual processing period, check the refund status in the e-filing portal to see if there is any pending action. Taxpayers should also check any emails or notices they may have received from the Income Tax Department as these may contain information about any discrepancies in the return or additional verification requirements. Pre-validate your bank account and fill in your bank details correctly while filing the return to avoid refund failures and delays. Link your PAN with Aadhaar.
