“6.1 Terra is here! — Announcing the new model, OpenAI CEO Sam: The wider industry impact

OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model designed for faster, more cost-effective performance across everyday work tasks, including writing, visual analysis, coding and computer use. The company says the model is a significant upgrade over GPT-5.6 Terra, offering improved accuracy, more natural writing and stronger abilities to interact with desktop applications. Announcing the new model, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X: “6.1 Terra is here!

It is good at a lot of things, but we are especially excited for this new era of computer use”.

In its official announcement, OpenAI said that GPT-6.1 Terra is designed to handle tasks such as drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms, editing videos and processing invoices into accounting software. OpenAI said its standard API prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, making it more suitable for developers looking to automate high-volume workflows. At maximum reasoning effort, the error rate dropped to 4.3%, an improvement of 18 percentage points over its predecessor, according to the company.

GPT-6.1 Terra price and availability

GPT-6.1 Terra is available to all Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, and $5 per million output tokens. OpenAI said GPT-6.1 Terra retains the safeguards developed for GPT-6 Astra and meets the Critical threshold for cybersecurity under the company’s Preparedness Framework. The model is more likely than GPT-5.6 Terra to stay within the scope of a user’s request and disclose its limitations or potential blockers, according to OpenAI’s evaluations.

It also showed resistance to prompt-injection attempts designed to divert it from the assigned task.
