Elon Musk has a ‘failure warning’ for these technology companies; says: Investors have already started betting against them
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk said more than 200 such companies could face closures and consolidation, although a few may survive. In the post, Musk pointed to SpaceX ’s ability to raise $40 billion in debt for graphics processing units (GPUs), saying its investment-grade status and revenue from Starlink and rocket launches helped it secure the funding.
Elon Musk has warned that most “neoclouds”, startups that rent out computing power for artificial intelligence (AI), may not survive as access to funding becomes harder. He also said lenders have largely stopped providing money to companies that do not earn significant revenue outside AI data centres.
- There are delays in the existing pipeline that will catch people off guard in 2027. Them telling Ant they have no compute for them (rumored in Ant’s S-1) if true is a huge tell that this is already happening.
Neoclouds are companies that provide cloud computing services mainly for artificial intelligence (AI) and other demanding computing tasks. They offer access to powerful chips, especially GPUs (graphics processing units), which are used to train and run AI models. Traditional cloud providers offer a wide range of services, from data storage and website hosting to databases and software tools. Neoclouds focus more narrowly on providing the computing power needed for AI workloads. Hyperacalers will (obviously) react by focusing on their own internal compute needs over any third party. If the third party is a model company, they will tell them to go through their model router where they will also take a non-trivial vig.
