As the co-founder and chief executive of Nvidia, he helped take a graphics-chip company founded in 1993 into one of the most important technology companies in the world. Success is often measured in visible things: a degree, a promotion, a company that survives, or an invention that changes an industry. Jensen Huang has spent much of his career around those measures. Yet when Huang was asked about what helps people become successful, he did not point first to intelligence or academic achievement. He spoke about hardship, resilience and the way difficult experiences can shape a person. His view is summed up in a line that puts character ahead of raw ability.
Huang made the remark while speaking to students at Stanford University in 2024. Nvidia was founded in 1993 by Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem, initially with a focus on computer graphics. The company later developed the GPU, with the GeForce 256 introduced in 1999 as a landmark in the development of programmable computer graphics.
“Greatness comes from character, and character isn’t formed out of smart people — it’s formed out of people who have suffered. The distinction Huang makes is between being capable and being able to withstand difficult circumstances. Intelligence can help someone understand a complicated problem. Education can provide knowledge. Technical skill can make it possible to build something that others cannot. None of those qualities, by themselves, guarantee that a person will keep going when a plan fails or when a long period of uncertainty arrives. It is reflected in how someone behaves when circumstances become uncomfortable. A person may have to accept criticism, recover from a mistake, work through disappointment or continue making decisions without knowing whether the outcome will be favourable. Huang’s argument is not that suffering automatically produces a good character. Difficult experiences can affect people in many different ways. His point is that hardship can provide situations in which resilience, patience and judgement have to be developed rather than simply understood in theory. Huang has often spoken about the difficult parts of building a company. Its technology eventually became central to parallel computing and artificial intelligence. That path was not simply a straight rise. Huang has described Nvidia’s history as containing serious mistakes and periods when the company’s future was uncertain. He has discussed several early challenges and what he described as near-death experiences for the company. This helps explain why he speaks about suffering in such practical terms. For someone who has spent decades running a technology company through changing markets, setbacks are not unusual events. They are part of the work. Resilience is easy to discuss when nothing is going wrong. It becomes more complicated when a person has invested years in something and still does not know whether it will work. Huang’s comments suggest that resilience is partly built through exposure to those situations. A setback forces a person to make another decision. Failure can require an adjustment rather than an immediate answer. Repeated difficulties can also change how someone views risk, expectations and responsibility. That does not mean people should seek suffering for its own sake. Huang’s comments are better understood as an observation about unavoidable hardship. Difficult experiences happen in education, careers, businesses and ordinary personal life. His argument is that avoiding every uncomfortable experience may also mean avoiding some of the situations in which resilience develops. Intelligence has limits: Understanding a problem quickly does not always mean having the resilience to stay with it longest. Expectations must allow for reality: High expectations can exist alongside low resilience. When results fall short, the ability to adapt matters. Failure can provide useful information: A mistake does not define someone’s ability. It can show what needs to change when examined honestly.
