India’s CCPA escalates probe into Apple’s software warranty terms, in case that claims iOS 18 update damaged some iPhones’ screens
India’s consumer regulator is reportedly probing Apple ’s software warranty terms in a case that claims that the iOS 18 update allegedly damaged iPhone functionality. Because apple does not provide a warranty for software, some consumers reportedly had to pay for repairs.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has escalated the matter for a “detailed investigation” after receiving complaints about problems linked to the iOS 18 rollout The consumer agency told Apple last year that it had received a large number of complaints alleging that the update caused screen display and microphone malfunctions, among other issues, according to a Reuters report.
What Apple says about the iOS 18 complaints
Apple also said it had found no systemic issues with iOS 18. Apple separately said it had not identified any issues or safety concerns with iOS 18 in India. Apple has disputed the claims and says it found no systemic problem with iOS 18.
The company said in an August letter that not providing a warranty for software is consistent with global industry standards, according to Reuters. The company said it would work with authorities to provide clarity on how it responded to customers. Apple is contesting the regulator’s accusations. The case is still under investigation, and the regulator’s allegations have not been finally established.
