OpenAI has introduced a new virtual try-on feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to see how clothes and accessories may look on them before making a purchase, as the company expands its push into AI-powered shopping. Notably, OpenAI isn’t the first to bring virtual try-on to an AI assistant — Google launched a similar feature last year.
OpenAI said the option will appear as a new”Try On” button within ChatGPT’s shopping results. The feature lets users upload a selfie or a full-body photograph to generate images showing how a clothing item or accessory would appear on them. Users can also upload screenshots or images of products found elsewhere online and ask ChatGPT to virtually try them on.
The new features are powered by its recently launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which OpenAI says delivers more natural lighting, richer textures, improved editing accuracy and reduced image-generation latency, according to the company. OpenAI has also launched a Favorites feature that allows users to save products in a dedicated library for future reference. The rollout is part of a broader update to ChatGPT’s shopping capabilities. Saved items will be stored alongside virtual try-on images within the app.
How virtual try-on works
OpenAI said these new shopping features are built on its recently launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which the company says delivers more natural lighting, richer textures, more reliable adherence to editing instructions, and reduced latency when generating images — improvements that directly support the kind of realistic, fast image rendering a convincing virtual try-on experience requires.
These saved items will sit alongside any try-on images a user has generated, keeping everything in one place, according to OpenAI. The feature lets ChatGPT users upload a selfie or a full-body photo to visualize how a specific piece of clothing or an accessory might actually look on them. The second new feature, called Favorites, lets users save products they come across to a dedicated Library within the app, making it easier to revisit items later rather than losing track of them in a long chat history.
