Shift in release schedule staggers hardware volume
Rather than debuting an entire hardware lineup at once, Apple prioritised three premium offerings this autumn while pushing its entry-level devices to next spring The standard base-model iPhone 18 and a newly designed iPhone Air have reportedly been held back for an early 2027 release. Component manufacturing for those standard units is not expected to start until late 2026. This year, the standard iPhone 18, which could provide a boost to volumes, will not require components until toward the end of the year, for launch in early next year 2027,” a supply chain manager explained the split strategy.
“We do find the demand in terms of volume from August for the second half of this year is not as strong as previous years when all the new models are introduced all together.
A separate source with direct insight into procurement channels told the publication that overall shipment volume from late August through October has tracked lower than in previous launch cycles. However, part of this lull stems from Apple reorganising its retail rollout timeline.
Apple has reportedly instructed several key supply chain partners to scale back component manufacturing for its flagship iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, following higher retail price points driven by increasing memory chip expenses that have softened consumer interest. Two supply chain insiders told the publication that component orders for October have been trimmed by 15% to 20% compared to initial production forecasts due to softer-than-expected market uptake. Citing industry sources familiar with the matter, Nikkei Asia that the Cupertino tech giant has grown increasingly cautious regarding device shipments since early September.
