WhatsApp automatically saves the photos and videos you receive: The wider industry impact

If your gallery is full of memes, forwarded good-morning images and photos from group chats you barely read, you’re not alone. WhatsApp automatically saves the photos and videos you receive to your phone’s gallery or camera roll, and you can turn this on or off at any time. Here is how to stop it on both Android and iPhone, for all chats or just a few.

Before you start: two different settings

People often mix up two things, so it’s worth being clear. One setting controls whether WhatsApp shows downloaded media in your gallery. The other controls whether WhatsApp downloads media automatically over Wi-Fi or mobile data. WhatsApp regulates media auto-downloading independently of saving to your gallery. To clean up your gallery, you need the first one. To save mobile data and storage, you may want the second too. Stop all chats from appearing in your gallery

•Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu, then go to Settings. •Tap Chats. •Turn off Media visibility. This prevents newly downloaded media from showing up in your phone’s gallery, so photos and videos already there stay put and only new ones are affected. •Open the chat and tap the contact or group name at the top. •Tap Media visibility. •Select No in the pop-up window. This is useful for noisy family or college groups, while you keep saving photos from chats that matter. Stop all chats from saving to the camera roll •Open WhatsApp and tap Settings at the bottom right. •Open Chats and turn off Save to Camera Roll. With the setting off, incoming media stays inside WhatsApp until you save it yourself. Stop it for one chat only •Open the chat and tap the contact’s name or number at the top. •Under Save to Camera Roll, choose Never If you also want to save data and storage, you can stop WhatsApp from downloading media at all until you tap it. •Go to Settings > Storage and data (the menu names can vary slightly by version). •Under media auto-download, choose what happens on mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. •Set Photos, Audio, Video and Documents to Never if you want full control.

Note that this changes how files are downloaded, not whether they appear in your gallery, so the two settings work best together. Turning these settings off doesn’t stop you from manually downloading the media you want to keep. Open the photo or video in the chat and use the save or download option to send it to your gallery whenever you choose. •Storage still gets used. Photos and videos you receive may still sit inside WhatsApp, so your phone’s memory isn’t freed unless you also clear chat media. Use Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage to review and delete large files. •Backups are separate. If iCloud Photos or Google Photos is on, anything in your gallery or camera roll can sync to the cloud, so turning off saving also reduces what gets uploaded. •Menus change. WhatsApp updates its settings often, and the wording may differ slightly on your phone, so look for the closest match if you can’t find an option. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient.
