UK MPs table motion highlighting India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir
NEW DELHI: A group of British MPs are aiming to reaffirm India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir in a motion tabled ahead of Accession Day on October 26. The motion also raises concerns over terrorism in the region, including targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits.
Sponsored by Conservative MP Bob Blackman, the Early Day Motion marks the anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh signing the Instrument of Accession in 1947. Blackman, who represents Harrow East, signed the motion on October 12. Democratic Unionist Party MP Jim Shannon and Labour MP Gill Furniss signed it on October 13.
It calls for respect for sovereign boundaries in discussions on Jammu and Kashmir, while noting that Kashmiri Pandits continue to face threats of terrorism and intimidation, reported ANI. The motion expresses sympathy for civilians killed and injured in terrorist attacks across Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakistan-occupied regions. It also highlights casualties among security personnel and civilians, placing the security situation alongside calls for constructive dialogue and community cohesion. On India-UK ties, the motion stresses the importance of strong bilateral relations. It also acknowledges the contribution of British communities of Jammu and Kashmiri heritage to the UK’s cultural, social and civic life. The motion welcomes peaceful Accession Day commemorations in Britain, saying such events can promote historical awareness, cultural exchange and civic participation. An Early Day Motion allows MPs to place their views on the parliamentary record and invite other lawmakers to support them. It does not constitute a formal resolution of the House of Commons or, by itself, establish a change in UK government policy. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
