Because their battery compartments do not meet mandatory safety requirements, on September 24, 2026, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 43,674 light-up children’s toys. Children’s toys are designed to attract attention with bright colours, sounds and lights, but some of those features can also introduce safety risks.
The toys contain button cell batteries in compartments that can be opened by children without the use of a tool, according to the CPSC. This violates the mandatory federal safety standard for toys containing button or coin batteries. Button cell and coin batteries can pose a particularly serious danger if swallowed by a child. Once ingested, a battery can become lodged in the body and trigger a chemical reaction that may cause severe internal burns and other potentially life-threatening injuries. In some cases, swallowing a button battery can result in death. The CPSC has advised consumers to immediately stop allowing children to use the recalled toys. Owners should contact ABC Trading to request a refund.
Because these small batteries can be difficult to spot but potentially dangerous if swallowed, parents and caregivers are advised to check recalled products carefully and keep loose batteries away from children.
