Rocky Fernandez’s life took an unexpected turn when a car crash left the Army veteran paralysed, forcing him to rebuild plans that had once seemed straightforward. Recovery brought hospital stays, rehabilitation and medical setbacks, but his ambitions did not disappear. Seven years after the accident, he reached a milestone that once seemed difficult to imagine: graduation. His journey involved far more than completing coursework, requiring him to balance ongoing health challenges with college and daily life. Now, he is preparing to begin a career in petroleum engineering.
The years that followed were marked by medical complications and rehabilitation. There were extended periods in hospital, including treatment for a serious infection, while adapting to life with paralysis brought a different set of demands outside the hospital as well. Reportedly, he found support at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, where treatment was accompanied by services aimed at helping him regain some independence and continue pursuing his education. His sessions have included meditation, deep relaxation and sound-bowl therapy alongside yoga. Robinson described Fernandez as willing to experiment with different approaches to his wellbeing, rather than treating rehabilitation as something confined to conventional medical appointments.
The graduation this spring marked the completion of a course of study that began before his accident and continued through years of profound change.
